Shea Butter
Shea Butter Uganda - is
a butter obtained from the nuts of Shea nut trees. Shea Nut tree is
known as ‘moo-yahoo tree’ in the local language. Shea
Butter and Shea butter oil is locally known as ‘moo- yahoo’.It
is also called Karite Butter or African Shea Nut Butter, but in Uganda
and southern Sudan it is well known by the name ‘ mo -yahoo’.
‘Moo-yahoo tree’ (Shea nut trees) are grown naturally
in Uganda and is considered as God’s gift to Uganda. Shea nut
trees found in Uganda, African savannah, gives up fruits once in a
year. Shea nut trees start bearing fruit after 15 to 20 years in the
beginning and continue to do so every year for the rest of its life
span.
The average life of the Shea nut tree is more than 300 years and that
is why it is considered as God’s Gift to UGANDA and Africa at
large. In other words it is NATURE’S BEST GIFT TO UGANDA AND
UGANDA’S BEST GIFT TO THE WORLD. Shea nut tree is a deciduous
tree, about 10 to 15 meters in height; it has white flowers at cluster
at the end of the shoots, about one meter long. The tree is encased
in barriers, which fall to the ground, and nuts are collected and
further processed to make Shea butter in Uganda. GURU NANAK OIL MILLS
is the only factory manufacturing Shea butter in East Africa. Shea
nuts are cleaned, washed, dried in sunshine and are processed in our
factory at Lira to produce natural Shea butter. SHEA BUTTER UGANDA,

There are two main varieties of Shea Nut called Vitellaria Paradoxa
and Vitellaria Nilotica. Vitellaria Paradoxa is produced in West Africa
where as Vitellaria Nilotica is produced only in Northern Uganda and
Southern Sudan. Unfortunately these areas (Northern Uganda and Southern
Sudan), both are currently states of civil unrest and so generally
this variety is not available in the market.
However Guru Nanak Oil Mills is based in Lira and has advantages and
access to get these rare species from the Northern part of Uganda.
Guru Nanak Oil Mills has promoted and supported the Shea butter production
in Uganda. Guru Nanak Oil Mills pays cash for the Shea nuts brought
for sale by the local community,enhancing the local economy. Guru
Nanak Oil Mills also educates and encourages the tribal folk to protect
this rare species of trees - “The Green Gift from GOD to mankind”.
Where as in past there was no buyers of seeds and Shea butter was
produced by crude methods by rural women. This resulted in very poor
quality and high cost of production, making it unacceptable by foreign
markets. But Guru Nanak Oil Mills has latest machinery and technology

Shea butter Uganda has some significant advantages over the common
variety [ The West African Shea Butter (Vitellaria Paradoxa)] in composition
and applications like SHEA BUTTER UGANDA is very soft in texture and
it melts very smoothly on the body of human being where as the other
variety west African shea butter,has to be rubbed with hand to create
frictional heat, and melt it first ,before applying on the body. GURU
